A fire that broke out at St Peter's Catholic School in Guildford on Wednesday night (24 January) 'was huge', according to Surrey Fire and Rescue Service.

Eight fire engines were called in at around 6pm to tackle the blaze in Horseshoe Lane East.

Flames were seen roaring from a construction site in the school's grounds, situated between reception and the sixth form centre.

Workers there evacuated the area as soon as they became aware of the danger.

Zoe Rainbird, who lives locally, took this footage of the blaze from her bathroom window:

A statement on the St Peter's website says the school will be open today (25 January).

It reads:

"There has been a fire at St Peter's Catholic School tonight (Wednesday 24th January)  which has only affected the new building.  We would like to reassure everyone that no-one was hurt, the fire has been contained and is under control by the local fire services.

"School will be open as usual and we will take all the appropriate actions to ensure that everyone is kept safe at all times.  If there are any changes to the above, the school website will be updated and a Schoolcomms will be sent out .

"Thank you to everyone who has sent messages and pledges of support, it is sincerely appreciated."

"It was huge" he said.

"Once those gas cylinders were involved we had quite a flame afront on this side of the building issuing and touching the unaffected building there. (the sixth form centre)

"Our main aim was to control that so that two buildings weren't involved."

The fire is now under control, but crews are expected to stay at the scene all night.

Police and the ambulance service were also called, but no injuries were reported.

However, Watch Commander Roberts said it has had an impact on the building: "At the moment because the building is under construction there's no fire resistance in place.

"There is some damage to the first floor across the whole of the left side of the building."

A fire investigation is now underway.
