How you can help bring 'Boris Bikes' to Guildford

Published at 6:00am 29th November 2017.

The University of Surrey has made a late push to bring so called 'Boris Bikes' to Guildford.

They are in the final of the Santander Cycle University Challenge, a national competition giving universities the opportunity to design and launch their own personalised cycle hire scheme.

The two universities that achieve the highest percentage above their fundraising target will receive £100,000 support from Santander to install the scheme on their campuses.

So far Surrey has raised over £30,000 of the £51,000 target.

With just over a week until the competition closes, the university has pledged £25,000 towards the scheme.

This is the maximum it is allowed to pledge and does not count towards the crowdfunding target, but if they are successful will go towards installing the bikes.

Ed Nelson, Head of the University’s Transport Team, said: “This pledge, along with the generous support of many residents, students and staff, shows that there is wide support for this scheme in Guildford.

"We want to thank everyone who has supported us so far, whose support has taken us past 60 per cent of our total, which is phenomenal in just three weeks.

"However, we need a big push for the last two weeks to get us over the finishing line and make our town an even greener place to live and work.

“We would ask everyone to make a pledge, and if you have already done so, ask your friends and loved ones to consider making a contribution. Please back the bike!”
