Guildford set for fast London train every 10 minutes

Published at 6:00am 27th October 2017. (Updated at 3:20pm 27th October 2017)

Guildford could get a fast train to London every ten minutes during peak times.

The metro-style service is proposed as part of a major overhaul of timetables in Surrey and Hampshire.

New franchise-owner South Western Railway has launched a consultation on plans that would come into effect from December 2018.

It says its aim is to add capacity at peak times, provide faster services, have earlier and later trains, and increase Sunday services.

Peak hours are trains arriving in London between 7am and 10am, and those leaving London 4pm to 7pm.

Under the plans, Guildford would go from having five fast services to London during peak times to having six.

It would also go from having two stopping services via Cobham, to having four.

As well as keeping the two stopping services which currently run via Epsom.

SWR has been forced to back down over plans to halve the number of trains between Hook and London.

A campaign against the move was launched by North East Hampshire MP Ranil Jayawardena.

But he says local commuters still need to make their views known, or they risk losing the re-instated trains: "To try to remove railway services that people rely on to make sure that they can give themselves and their families a good life, would be disastrous for our area and would be the wrong thing for South Western Railway to do.

"I am pleased that they have begun to listen.

"But the truth is that if we don't say that we support these changes that they have now put forward as an alternative proposal, than others will probably be saying that they support the old version which cut out these services."

The consultation runs until December 22nd.
