Guildford Flames secure cup quarter-final spot

Guildford Flames secured a quarter-final spot in the cup over the weekend after picking up three out of a possible four points.

On Saturday the Flames had Jesse Craige to thank as he scored an overtime winner to beat Cardiff Devils 3-2.

"We had great support from a large travelling contingent of our fans," said Assistant Coach Milos Melicherik, "and that is always a great boost."

"Chris (Carrozzi) had a very solid outing in goal.  It was disappointing for us to allow the equaliser with a few minutes left in the game, but we recovered well mentally to get out there in overtime and make the most of a great opportunity to get a big win that puts us in a very good Cup position."

Then on Sunday at the Spectrum Paul Dixon's side got off to a good start with John Dunbar opening the scoring early on against Milton Keynes Lightning.

However after a closely fought game, the Flames were eventually beaten 3-2 on penalties.

Despite the loss they did still manage to pick up the relegation point.

Head Coach Paul Dixon said: "In the end we had a great chance to win it in overtime with about 90 seconds of 4 on 3, and had some good scoring opportunities but just couldn’t put it away.

“One night you win the virtual coin toss in overtime and the next night you don’t. That is basically where it ended up.”
