University of Surrey students forced to have lectures at Odeon cinema

Economics students at the University of Surrey have been left frustrated, after being forced to attend lectures at the Odeon cinema!

It's after staff over-recruited on the course by over 50 students, and have been left without enough lecture theatre space.

Part of their solution has been to split lectures in two, and use other site facilities, including Guildford College.

However, some of the timings of the new lectures clash with students' popular Wednesday afternoon activities.

Ali Douglas is Vice President of activities of the Student's Union. He said: "My personal opinion is that they are too little, too late.

"The issue is that they over-recruited and have too many students.

"They're trying to soften the blow but the mistake happened in the first place and that's the issue that we need to try and resolve going forward."

Alternative sites, including Guildford College, also means many students are having to travel further to get to their lectures.

But students are therefore having to pay more to get to the correct site.

Economics students, who are paying £9,250 per year for their tuition, were left "frustrated" by the move.

They were expecting to go to the conventional Stag Hill tutorial rooms, which is close to most university student accommodation.

"I believe there's been conversations around reimbursing students but there hasn't been any definitive action on that, as of yet.

"Myself and the students really want clarity from the university on what they're going to do to subsidise students' travel costs", Ali Douglas added.

A spokesperson for the University of Surrey said: “The need to use lecture space off site is extremely rare, but has been caused by the high number of successful applications for one of our courses, and we have worked closely with both staff and the Students’ Union to provide solutions suitable for all.

“The off-campus lectures will be taking place on one day of the week only, and we are confident that the external venues are more than suitable for the needs of both students and lecturers.

"We chose to use the Odeon as a one off last week due to lack of availability at Guildford College, where the rest of these lectures will take place this semester.

"We apologise for any inconvenience to our students.”
