£20,000 donated to fire-hit Guildford charity

Published at 3:38pm 15th September 2017.

A Guildford children's charity, devastated by fire, says it hopes to have services running again by the end of the month.

Challengers' current Stoke Park building will remain out of use but it will have use of the nearby Urban Saints.

Fire ripped through the building on Sunday when a tumble dryer caught fire.

The charity says the estimated cost of the damage is £600,000.

It says it has received more than £20,000 in donations.

What is damaged?

The downstairs play floor is damaged and the schemes will not be able to run.

The upstairs office is undamaged and the staff team have now returned to work which is a huge step forward.

What caused the fire?

The fire inspector verbally confirmed that the fire started in the utility room and was caused by the tumble drier – the machine was not in use at the time.

Is the damage insured?

Following the fire at our Guildford Play Centre which has devastated our beautiful play floor, we have now received an estimate of what it cost to repair the damage, this is estimated at around £600,000 for the building work alone.

The charity is insured and the claim is in process. At this time we are confident that our insurance will cover the major part of the rebuilding programme and other associated costs.

As with any insurance claim we will not know the cost to the charity until it has been settled.

While this is a worrying time for Challengers, we are keen to do all we can to get the organisation back on its feet and be delivering our preschool and play services as soon as possible from Guildford.

Every donation we receive helps us to get back on our feet as quickly as possible, and will help ensure that Challengers is able to do what we do best, making sure that disabled children and young people have the best possible time across all 23 of our schemes.
