Community rallies round to help fire-hit Guildford childrens charity

Published at 6:00am 15th September 2017. (Updated at 3:42pm 15th September 2017)

The fight is on to help a Guildford childrens charity rebuild after a devastating fire.

Challengers, which provides respite care for disabled youngsters, saw its centre at Stoke Park partly destroyed by a fire on Sunday.

It has been forced to shut this week leaving those who use it  having to find alternative care for their loved ones.

The fire was started by a tumble drier which was not in use at the time.

Children were inside the building, but thankfully they and staff were evacuated safely.

The downstairs play centre has been destroyed, but the local community is now rallying together to get it back up and running.

Zumba teacher Laura Goodsall has set up a two hour danceathon on Saturday.

People taking part are asked to donate £10 which will be given to Challengers.

"Challengers touches everybody's heart." Laura told Eagle.

"They do an amazing job and they're just amazing, why wouldn't you help?

"That's what community is all about, just getting out there and helping."

Eagle Radio was given access to the building just a day after the blaze, our photos show the pure devastation of the once bright play centre.

Laura says she could not help but do something after seeing photos and videos of the blaze online: "It totally devastated me.

"I was almost in tears because it is just so awful when an accident like that happens.

"I was absolutely devastated for them and felt like I needed to do something to help."

Saturday's danceathon will be at 2pm tomorrow (September 16) at the Lancaster Hall on Send Road in Send, Woking.

Anyone is welcome to attend and donations can be made via Laura's Just Giving page.
