Guildford's Friary Centre evacuated

Published at 4:09pm 4th September 2017.

The Friary Shopping Centre in Guildford was evacuated on Monday morning.

Shoppers were forced out onto the street with the sound of alarm bells ringing in their ears.

Surrey Fire and Rescue says it was alerted but did not need to send anyone.

Here is what happened, according to Richard Potts, Operations Manager at The Friary: "A brief evacuation took place on 4 September at 11.20am at The Friary following a malfunction of the alarm system.

"We are currently investigating the cause of this fault and apologise for any inconvenience this may have caused.

"The safety and security of our customers and staff is our first priority and we work hard to ensure all our emergency systems are in good working condition."
