Uber driver fined for illegal job in Guildford

Published at 1:11pm 18th August 2017. (Updated at 4:30pm 18th August 2017)

An Uber driver's been fined over £1,000 after taking two council workers on an unbooked journey from Guildford town centre.

It was back on 28 August 2016, that he agreed to take two council licensing officers to their destination without any notice.

He was parked outside the George Abbot pub on the lower High St and agreed to take two council licensing officers on an unbooked journey.

But Uber drivers are only allowed to take people on pre-booked journeys so it was a breach of their rules.

The driver was fined £250 plus a £30 victim surcharge and will have to pay the council's costs of £1,500.

Lead Cllr for Licensing and Community Safety, Cllr Graham Ellwood says: "Uber and other private hire drivers are only allowed to take pre-booked journeys and this breach shows a clear disregard for the rules.

"Our licensing officers are working night and day to address this issue. We're pleased that we have successfully prosecuted this driver and hope that this sends a strong message that illegally plying for hire is not acceptable in Guildford."

The case was heard at Guildford Magistrates Court on Wednesday 16 August 2017.
