"Callous" thieves target elderly and vulnerable in Surrey & Hampshire

Published at 3:45pm 1st August 2017. (Updated at 7:08pm 1st August 2017)

Thieves are targeting vulnerable and elderly people across the county, stealing debit cards and withdrawing large quantities of cash.

Last week an unsuspecting 87 year old woman lost  £1000 after she was targeted by a man who offered to carry her shopping.

The man pointed out a ‘dropped’ £10 note on the ground and asked her to check if it was hers.

Having to check her purse he took it off her to put it back into her bag, stealing her debit card in the process.

Surrey Police have issued advice on their facebook page as to what to look out for if you are targeted by 'Distraction Theft.'

The police are urging anyone who believes they have had this happen to them to cancel all cards and report the crime via the 101 phone number.
