Guildford War Memorial to mark 100 years since WW1

A new war memorial is being planned for Guildford.

It will be located in the Castle Grounds - Guildford's premier town centre park, featuring castle ruins dating back to 1066, and set within a park laid out as a Victorian pleasure garden.

The Council say the proposals are to mark 100 years since the end of World War I.

The site would commemorate and honour the sacrifices made by those who have been killed in military action or service since the end of the Second World War.

Cllr Matt Furniss, Lead Councillor for Infrastructure and Governance, explains: " We are planning to erect a new war memorial in memory of all those who have lost their lives in military combat or service since the end of World War II, and we are now seeking expressions of interest from designers, artists and sculptors, and asking them to put their ideas forward."

Cllr Mike Parsons, Deputy Mayor of Guildford, adds: "I am pleased to be involved with this project that recognises those from Guildford who made the sacrifice in the service of our country."

"The war memorial will be installed by 2018, to tie in with the centenary of the end of World War I.

We are looking for a design that will complement the location and its existing built features, including the existing memorial.

The fixed fee for the commission is £50,000 which will cover all fees, materials, fabrication and installation costs.

Cllr Furniss adds: "If you know of a relative or friend who has been lost in service - whose name we could add to the memorial, please get in touch."

Deadline for expressions of interest: Friday 18 August 2017

Residents are asked to email stephen.benbough@guildford.gov.uk with any suggested names to add to the memorial.
