Guildford Shakespeare Company put on 'audio described performance'

Published at 6:01am 14th July 2017. (Updated at 2:40pm 14th July 2017)

Guildford Shakespeare Company has opened their second open-air theatre show of the summer.

The Two Gentleman of Verona is one of Shakespeare's earliest comedies and also has an Audio Described performance on on 29 July.

Set in Italy in the mid-1950s, this production juxtaposes the parochial village life of Verona with cosmopolitan life in Milan.

The production, featuring live music and songs written and composed especially for the show by Matt Eaton, is set around a village café scene for Verona and a sophisticated nightclub setting for Milan.

The open-air theatre is at the University of Law Gardens.

The final matinee on 29 July is an Audio Described Performance for patrons who are visually impaired or blind (VIPs).

Co-Founder Matt Pinches: “We’re delighted to be working with our regular Audio Describer Kerry Elkins again to deliver this offer.

It is paramount to GSC that we make our work as accessible to as many people as possible and and the AD performances are a key part of that.”

Before the performance there is a Touch-Tour for VIPs to handle the show’s costumes, props and meet members of the cast.

VIPs listen to the Audio Description through infra-red head-sets (therefore not heard by other audience members).

In 2013 GSC won The Mayor’s Award for Access in the Arts for these performances.

The Audio Described performance is at 2.30pm on Saturday 29 July, with the Touch Tour at 1.15pm.
