Names sought for Guildford's new war memorial

Published at 4:13pm 6th July 2017.

A new war memorial is to be erected in Guildford, to commemorate those killed in service since the end of the Second World War.

But the council wants our help as it is taking submissions from the public for names which deserve to appear on the structure.

The hunt is also on for a design.

Councillor Matt Furniss, Lead Councillor for Infrastructure and Governance, said: "We are planning to erect a new war memorial in memory of all those who have lost their lives in military combat or service since the end of World War II, and we are now seeking expressions of interest from designers, artists and sculptors, and asking them to put their ideas forward."

The new memorial will be in the Castle Grounds and will be installed by 2018, to tie in with the centenary of the end of World War I.

Councillor Furniss added: "If you know of a relative or friend who has been lost in service – whose name we could add to the memorial, please get in touch."

Deadline for expressions of interest in desgining the memorial: Friday 18th August 2017
