Guildford town centre cycle races return

Published at 6:00am 5th July 2017.

The annual Guildford town centre cycle races are back this evening (Wednesday 5 July) at 6pm.

The event is guaranteed to bring a fast and hard-fought race, with the course starting on the cobbled High Street and circuiting round through North Street and Market Street.

Jon Lewis, event organiser, says: "There is a constant flow of riders to watch. From a spectator's point of view this is probably the best bike race you can go and see."

Multiple races will be held for people of all ages, including those under 16.

The programme of events will be as follows:

  • 6.15pm - Hamptons International Youth Criteriums - U8 (Youth E)
  • 6.25pm - Hamptons International Youth Criteriums - U12/U10 (Youth C & D)
  • 6.40pm - Hamptons International Youth Criteriums - U16/U14 (Youth A & B)
  • 7pm - Cycleworks 'Local Heroes' Criterium (3rd Cat Only - Regional B)
  • 7.30pm - Charlotteville Cycling Club Womens Criterium (E/1/2/3)
  • 8pm - Penningtons Manches LLP Elite Criterium (E/1/2 - National B)

The races were first promoted by Charlotteville Cycling Club in 1984 as part of the Guildford Festival. The route was the same as it is today, and originally attracted a large crowed of 2000 spectators.

Jon says: "It has become iconic and has run for over 25 years. It brings people from far and wide, from counties as far as Devon and Essex, as well as top level racers."

The High Street, North Street and Market Street will be closed from 5pm until around 10pm for the races to take place.

The event is free and invites everyone to come along.
