Cheese and Chilli Festival Comes To Guildford

Published at 4:36pm 29th June 2017. (Updated at 3:11pm 30th June 2017)

The Cheese and Chilli Festival is coming to Guildford this July and we spoke to event organiser, Simon Stewart all about the day.

So, what can you expect to see when you visit the Cheese and Chilli Festival?

So the Cheese and Chilli festival is essentially a celebration of all things Cheese and Chilli. We do also offer a full family day out experience as well at an affordable rate... There are bars, live music, stunt shows, and falconry displays... loads of stuff for the kids too, Punch and Judy, balloon modelling, magic shows and some street theatre, so there is plenty to do for everyone.

We did the show last year for the first time and we had over 10,000 people attend, it was a great response and we can't wait to do it again.

How did the Cheese and Chilli Festival come about?

It was easy, as an event organiser I used to arrange sports events but my love for cheese and Chilli has always been there and I always wanted to do something food based. So I came up with the idea of the Cheese and Chilli Festival and it went from there...

What cheeses can you recommend?

We encourage all Producers of cheese to come to the shows. We do the shows in 5 different areas so we are lucky and we can localise the cheese in those areas and bring in new influences too. Mexicana Cheese do produce a fantastic cheese, such a wide range too so I'd definitely recommend checking them out at the Festival.

So, what have you brought along with you today?

I've bought in some samples of Mexicana, in particular the extra hot cheese and the original hot. This cheese is new to the UK so they're sampling it at the moment. I think it may be in the supermarket now and thankfully they've bought some samples in for us to try.

Afternoon presenter, Kim Robson braved the new Mexicana Extra Hot cheese. Here's how it went.

As well as all of the cheeses on offer, you are going to be doing a Chilli Eating Contest at the festival, can you tell us more about that?

At the end of each day we finish with a finale which is a chilli eating competition and we have a Man vs. Food Competition at midday. it's where we invite 6 members of the public up on the stage to see how many of the chillis they can handle. They range from mild to extra hot so it's a last man standing competition.

How much are tickets and where can we go to find out more?

The Festival is on from 10AM in the morning till 5PM in the afternoon. Kids are free to get in and £5 for adults in advance or £7 on the door. You can find tickets at tourist information in Guildford or on our website. You can also pay on the day. Come along it's great, it's a party!
