The Academy of Contemporary Music (ACM) is now the official operator of Guildford's The Electric Theatre.

After a formal bidding process, the ACM has today signed a 20 year lease on the iconic arts venue which was previously under the management of Guildford Borough Council.

ACM were announced as the leaseholders in January and have since been working with Guildford Borough Council in the transfer of staff and operations.

Last year over 1,600 people signed a petition for the academy to take over the site.

It will now run the theatre as a performing arts venue with community use.

Oliver Sussat, Director at ACM, said: “We have really enjoyed working with Guildford Borough Council over these last months, learning more about The Electric Theatre, its employees, hirers, community groups and customers as we did so.

"With the lease now signed, we are very much focused on working with all of these people to bring and invite fresh ideas, programming and projects to the space."

Lead Councillor for Social Welfare, Heritage and the Arts, Cllr Nikki Nelson-Smith said:"This is a positive step forward for the theatre.

"It will be maintained as a performing arts venue with community use – our key aim throughout the whole of this process.”
