Guildford to join 'Great Get Together' in memory of MP Jo Cox

Published at 8:03am 17th June 2017.

Guildford will join a UK 'Great Get Together' celebration today - one year on since the death of MP Jo Cox.

The scheme has been set up to commemorate the first anniversary of the mother-of-two's murder on 16 June last year.

It is a National celebration aimed at bringing communities together.

Events are being planned across the country over The Great Get Together weekend of Friday 16 to Sunday 18 June.

The weekend marks the anniversary of the murder of Jo Cox who inspired us when she said "we are far more united and have far more in common with each other than things that divide us".

Celebrating the Jo Cox Loneliness Campaign, charities and businesses are organising a fun street party today (Saturday 17th June) from 10am - 4pm on Chapel Street, Guildford.

There will be activities for all ages such as; scavenger hunt, fete games, face paint, bake off cake contest, food and drink tasting, bbq, arts and craft activities and much more.

There will also be a cosy sofa to ask people about their views on loneliness and bring people together by starting a conversation.

The Big Lunch, Jo Cox Foundation and other groups have joined forces to invite people to come together.

It hopes friends, neighbours and others they don't yet know will come together for street parties, picnics, barbecues and bake-off competitions.

Visit the The Great Get Together website to sign up to host a street party and to find out what other events are taking place in your area.
