A bus has ploughed into a number of cars - narrowly missing a block of flats in Guildford.

It happened on Woodbridge Road on Wednesday evening (June 14) just after 7pm, close to the junction with York Road, by the Cricket Club.

Witnesses at the scene tell us it happened as the bus turned out of Leas Road.

It went into parked cars before mounting the pavement and coming to a stop yards from the building.

Five vehicles were involved in the crash - one car ended up on its roof.

One person suffered minor injuries.

Photographs from the scene show extensive damage to the front of the bus and a car on its roof.

Kathryn Parker lives in the flat the bus stopped just yards short of. She described the carnage as it happened: "My partner heard a bang, and then we just saw people running outside and dialling 999. So we ran outside and it was just chaos.

"There was a car on its roof, a car going down. I expected there to be loads of people but luckily there was no one in there."

"I've always, always, always had a horrible feeling, because the way people drive down here is absolutely crazy.

"All you hear all night is speeding cars and I've always had a horrible image of someone crashing through - because it's so easily done if they're driving the way they are.

In a statement Surrey Police said: "Officers were called just after 7pm after a bus collided with several parked cars before mounting the pavement near the junction with York Road.

"Five parked vehicles were involved in the collision with one of the vehicles overturning as a result.

"One person was treated for minor injuries.

"Ambulance and fire crews are also in attendance and the road remains partially blocked."

A man has been arrested in connection with the incident and is currently in custody.

The A322 Woodbridge Road was closed in both directions, between Markenfield Road and A246 York Road.

It has now reopened.

WATCH: Residents in flats nearby give eyewitness accounts:

A resident in one of the flats, Laura Watkins, told Eagle what she saw: "Our bedroom backs on to the road , we were just laying down half asleep and I heard this horn.

"I got this feeling this isn't going to end well, so I sat bolt upright, and all I see is this bus coming off the road, smashing into cars, before I ran out the room to grab my phone to ring the police."
