Woman dies after burglary at her Guildford home

Published at 11:27am 2nd June 2017. (Updated at 2:27pm 2nd June 2017)

A woman who had her gold wrist watch stolen from her Guildford home - sadly died a few days later.

Surrey Police say at the time of the offence, the elderly victim in her 80s, was in hospital.

She passed away a few days later without returning home.

It was only when a family member went to the house that the burglary was discovered.

Joe Mobey, 45, from Aldershot Road, Guildford appeared at Guildford Crown Court on 25 May 2017 where he pleaded guilty to burglary and was sentenced to three years and four months in jail.

The court heard that Mobey broke into a house in Westway, Park Barn, Guildford sometime between 10–14 December 2016 and stole a gold wrist watch.

The watch was given to the victim by her late husband and was of significant sentimental value.

It has not been recovered.

A forensic hit on blood found at the scene was linked to Joe Mobey.

After handing himself in at Guildford Police Station on 18 January 2017, Mobey was arrested and later charged and remanded into custody.

PC Antony Brady said: “I hope the sentence handed out to Mobey gives some measure of comfort to the victim’s family in what has been a very difficult time for them.

"Targeting elderly victims in this way really is the lowest of the low and I’m pleased that Mobey is now off the streets of Surrey for a period of time.”
