Pro-skater contest cancelled as Guildford Spectrum Ice MELTS

Published at 6:14pm 22nd May 2017. (Updated at 6:21pm 22nd May 2017)

Professional skaters have been left disappointed, after a technical fault closed Guildford Spectrum's ice.

All ice-skating competitions at the Spectrum were cancelled on Mondau (May 22), due to a problem with the ice freezer plant.

The Guildford Open Competitions were due to take place today (May 22) but have had to be postponed.

A Guildford Spectrum statement says they're waiting for engineers to get things up and running again.

Public sessions on Spectrum ice were also cancelled.

On Sunday, the leisure centre had said they'd "endeavour to have the ice plant running again" by Monday.

This morning, they issued an update saying: "The preparation of Spectrum Ice is taking a little longer than expected.

"To ensure our skaters have an enjoyable and safe experience we have taken the decision to use today to continue improving the quality of ice so that it is suitable to skate on.

"Spectrum Ice will be open from 9am to 9pm on Tuesday 23rd May for the Guildford Open Competition only (this is a 1 hour delay to the programmed start)."

"All other sessions on Tuesday have been cancelled in order to allow the competition to continue into the evening.

Therefore there will be no Ice Dance Club or evening Public Skating session (Simply Skate) on Tuesday 23rd May."

A statement on Guildford Ice Figure Skating Club, read: "We sincerely apologise for the inconvenience and disappointment this may cause."
