Does your dog have what it takes to star on a Guildford stage?

Published at 2:22pm 25th April 2017. (Updated at 5:40pm 27th April 2017)

Do you think your dog has what it takes to be the next big thing?

The Guildford Shakespeare Company (GSC) is looking for three canines to join the cast of its next big production.

The question is could you see your pet behaving on an open-air stage?

The Two Gentlemen of Verona will be showing this summer but the final cast members are yet to be discovered.

You four-legged friend could be playing the infamous part of Crab, set in 1950s Italy.

Crab is an unruly but lovable dog who constantly disobeys his master, ending up ‘making water against a gentlewoman’s farthingale’ (not on actually shown on stage!).

He features in two key scenes in this early Shakespeare comedy, one of which famously featured in the Oscar-winning film Shakespeare in Love.

GSC say ideally it is "looking for three dogs to share the part for the 17 performances, and are particularly interested in hearing from large but docile dogs" - particularly those with experience of being on stage

The production, directed by Charlotte Conquest (Grimms’ Fairy Tales, The Comedy of Errors, Alice in Wonderland), runs from Friday 14 July to Saturday 29 July.

Evening performances are 7.30pm, with Saturday matinees at 2.30pm, and the dogs will be required to be on site 30 minutes before the performance begins.

It is anticipated that the dogs will perform alternate nights, although they will need to be available for one of the following rehearsal dates 12, 13, 14 July.

Performances are at the University of Law on Portsmouth Road, Guildford.

What's in it for your pet?

GSC say: "Once Crab’s final scene has finished, they are free to go home, or equally they are very welcome to stay for the curtain call to meet their public.

"There is no fee for Crab, but GSC will provide them and their owners with their own gazebo dressing room, complementary tickets and as many Bonios as Crab demands."

If you think your dog might relish the opportunity to tread the boards with GSC this summer?
