After falling behind early, the Flames scored 3 opening period goals to take a lead at the break and never trailed again on their way to a 2nd Leg 5-4 win over Sheffield Steelers, and a 9-8 aggregate score that clinches a Challenge Cup Semi Final slot.

Justin Buzzeo opened the scoring for the visitors just under 5 minutes in. John Dunbar answered at 8:37 but seconds later Robert Dowd had Steelers back in front, 2-1 on the night and 6-5 on aggregate.  A quick strike by Calle Ackered brought the evening and the combined score level at the period’s halfway mark and a Kruise Reddick strike inside the last 5 minutes had the Flames with a 3-2, 7-6 edge at the close of 20 minutes.

The Flames stepped up the 2nd period pressure with a 16-11 shot advantage and managed to extend the lead further when Jamie Crooks made it 4-2 and 8-6 on aggregate.

Steelers turned the tide early in the 3rd when they had sustained pressure and cut into their deficit with Tanner Eberle banging home a rebound at 46:19 and just missing bringing it level before a momentum changing powerplay and 54th  minute Jesse Craige bullet all but secured the Flames advancement.  Eberle did answer for the Steelers a little over 2 minutes from time, and with their net empty, Steelers tilted the ice to tie it, but they couldn’t find the equalizer to deny Spectrum’s men the Final 4 Cup place.

“It is a pretty exciting night to have picked up the win and be moving into the next round,” said Paul Dixon.

“The last few games we have been playing better and the guys really came through tonight in front of an amazing set of fans who created a fantastic atmosphere.”

“We will take a day to enjoy this and then turn our attention back to league play and a big weekend with, ironically, a trip into Sheffield before getting back here to take on Cardiff Devils on Sunday.”
