Flames book play-off place with win at Coventry

Published at 1:21pm 26th March 2018.

Guildford Flames were 5-3 winners against Coventry Blaze, securing them a top six finish and a place in the play-off quarter finals.

Kruise Reddick and Geoff Walker scored less than 20 seconds apart in the dying minutes, before Calle Ackered added another at Coventry to help the Flames to a 3rd period rally and and victory over the Blaze.

The win books a two game aggregate play-off against the Sheffield Steelers, with the home leg for Spectrum’s men on Sunday 1 April after a visit to Yorkshire on Saturday night.

Gaelan Patterson struck first for Coventry at 9:56, but John Dunbar replied just 22 seconds later to knot the score at a goal each.

A 5 on 3 manpower advantage for the Flames was their best chance to take a lead to break, but unable to convert, the period closed with the clubs knotted at a goal each.

Most of the middle 20 minute segment had melted off the clock when Brett Robinson had Blaze in front just 34 seconds from completion.

In the latter stages of the 3rd, while short-handed, Brett Ferguson pulled the Flames level.

A Ryan Dingle powerplay goal at 54:45 had Blaze back in front, but back to back Flames strikes by Reddick and Walker in the 17th minute grabbed a 4-3 lead before Ackered’s insurance nailed down the result.

Head Coach Paul Dixon. said: “Thinking back to the off season and all the planning for joining a new league, it is hard to believe that we have closed out the regular season with a top half finish and are now looking ahead to the playoffs up next.

“Tonight was a bit of a snapshot of how we have been all season with a team of guys who will never quit.  We look at the league season as a big success, and we are very excited to be heading to the playoffs next weekend and taking on Sheffield Steelers.

“Hopefully we can put in a 2 game effort that takes us to the Final 4 and another great milestone for our inaugural top flight season.”
