Guildford Flames sign new netminder as Godfrey departs

Published at 3:13pm 5th October 2017.

After more than three seasons with Guildford Flames, defenceman Sam Godfrey has left the club.

The former under 18 and 20 Jr. Great Britain team member was playing his first campaign in the top flight of British ice hockey.

Since arriving in 2014/15, he made 172 starts scoring 3 goals and 23 points along with 152 penalty minutes.

However he has struggled to get game time playing in the Elite League, which has lead to his departure.

Head Coach Paul Dixon said: "This was a difficult decision because Sam didn’t do anything wrong.

"In fact, it was nothing he did or didn’t do. We didn’t give Sam an opportunity to play at this level.  We have realized he is not going to get that chance here, so at his age he is far better to be allowed to find somewhere where he is going to get ice time

"Sam has been a dedicated servant of the club for 3 and a bit seasons, and we truly wish him well with his next team."

Meanwhile Dixon has signed a new netminder following the injury of Brian Stewart.

Canadian Chris Carrozzi joins from Rødovre Mighty Bulls in Denmark.

Because he holds an Italian passport, he was able to sign immediately.

"We didn’t get the kind of luck we might have hoped for in terms of Brian Stewart staying healthy all season long,” said Paul Dixon.

"Now that we know Brian will be out for several weeks, we had to make a move to shore us up at the back.  Once Brian returns we will have the kind of depth that we obviously will need at the position going forward.”

While at Bulls, the 6’3”, Carrozzi posted a 1.58 goals against average and 93.4 save percentage in 5 Danish Cup games while registering 3.97 and 88.2 across the same categories in 41 League starts.

Dixon added: "Chris is a great find at this time of the season. He certainly has the pedigree of a top goaltender, and we think he can have a lot of success for us."
