Vandalism at Guildford public garden delays its reopening

Published at 1:57pm 4th March 2020.

Vandalism at a public garden and playground in Guildford has delayed its reopening.

Westnye Gardens & Playground in Millmead closed on 14 January for essential maintenance and grass repair work.

The grass was vandalised between Friday (31 January) and Monday (3 February), but there were no witnesses, Guildford Borough Council has confirmed.

A spokesperson for the borough council said:

"Westnye Gardens is closed in order to repair wear and tear to the grass and garden. The vandalism increased the time needed to carry out the additional repairs.

"The garden is incredibly popular, with 54,000 visits last year, so the grass will inevitably need replacing over time.

"We hope to reopen Westnye Gardens in mid-March once the new grass has established and look forward to seeing everyone then to enjoy our fantastic play garden!"
