Guildford to soon get its own 'Angel of the North'

Drivers on the A3 will soon be looked down upon by a bronze sculpture described as the local version of the 'Angel of the North.'

It comes after the Watts Gallery Trust launched a fundraising campaign in 2017 to commission a new bronze cast of G. F. Watts'  famous sculpture, Physical Energy, to celebrate his bicentenary, and after Guildford Borough Council approved a £40,000 grant to help with the cost of the installation.

It is intended that the sculpture of a man on a horse will be sited on the hillside at the edge of the Watts Gallery in Compton later this year.

The original plaster model is held at the gallery, where the artist lived and worked.

Guildford Borough Councillor James Steel said:

“Our varied cultural heritage is a major local attraction and Watts Gallery celebrates this very important artist, with many thousands of visitors each year.

“It will benefit tourism and our economy, as well as creating a striking new landmark to be proud of – effectively Guildford’s Angel of the North.

“One of our key priorities is to support the borough’s arts, leisure and culture and this exciting project will provide many benefits.

“When finally in place, this sculpture of a man and horse will be fully accessible for visitors and residents, providing an impressive addition to the wider landscape for everyone to enjoy.”
