Council offers building control service in Guildford

Published at 4:53pm 10th July 2019.

The Building Control team at Guildford Borough Council is offering reassurance to residents affected by a national issue with Approved Inspectors - independent companies or individuals who carry out building control work on projects in England and Wales.

Working in the private sector, Approved Inspectors offer building control services as an alternative to Local Authority Building Control (LABC).

They must be registered with the Construction Industry Council and have professional indemnity and public liability insurance from a scheme approved by the Secretary of State.

It has recently come to light that some Approved Inspectors are no longer able to obtain adequate insurance cover and are therefore unable to carry out work they have been employed to do.

Cllr Jan Harwood, Lead Councillor for Planning, Planning Policy and Housing Delivery said:

"We want to reassure residents affected by this issue that there are alternatives available.

"We provide a highly professional building control service as a local authority and in this situation there are two options - either the project reverts to our team or the building control works are taken over by another Approved Inspector.

"We are happy to explain the next steps so please get in touch with our Building Control team if you need advice."

If you would like advice on this matter you can the council's building control team on 01483 444545.
