Plans to improve parking in Guildford approved

Published at 6:07pm 25th January 2019.

Plans aimed at making improvements to Guildford's car parks and reduce town centre congestion have been approved.

The changes agreed by the council include:

  • Increasing multi-payment (notes, cards, coins) options including more contactless pay-on-foot machines in town centre car parks starting with Bedford Road
  • Installing four electric car charging points (two at Millbrook car park and two at G Live car park)
  • Proposals to redevelop Guildford Park car park, including a new multi storey and additional electric car charging points are progressing with construction planned to start by summer 2019
  • Current charges will remain for all car parks Monday to Saturday, except York Road which will align with other town centre car park rates and North Street which will mirror on street 30 minute parking charges
  • On Sundays all car park charges will be standardised to £1.50 for up to 3 hours and £2.50 for 3-6 hours

Deputy Leader and Lead Councillor for Infrastructure and Governance, Cllr Matt Furniss, said:

“The changes and improvements are part of our aim to balance the parking needs of residents, businesses, visitors and shoppers together with other key objectives such as environmental and transport needs.

"Our Sustainable Parking Strategy for Guildford, part of our Corporate Plan encourages motorists to ‘drive to, not through’ the town by using the popular park-and-rides schemes and long-stay car parks while the bespoke Guildford Parking GEOMII phone app enables users to find the nearest parking space availability in real-time.

"We have seen a definite increase in car park use as more people visit and stay longer in Guildford.”

“Our car parks play an important part in supporting our town centre and local economy."
