Delays expected as Stoke Crossroads roadworks begin

Published at 12:45pm 17th July 2018. (Updated at 5:02pm 28th July 2018)

Motorists prepare for long delays as roadworks lasting nearly 18 weeks on one of Guildford's busiest junctions gets underway on Monday (30 July).

Work on the crossroads of the A25 and A320 is set to start on 30 July and will take place mainly overnight, with lane closures between the hours of 20:00 and 06:00.

The Stoke Crossroads Improvement Scheme, is aimed at making it easier for cyclists and pedestrians to cross, whilst also increasing traffic flow.

In a bid to minimise disruption, work has been scheduled to take place overnight and in stages, avoiding full road closures where possible.

Surrey County Council said: "This work involves major changes to the junction layout and will require parts of the junction to be closed at certain times.

"Diversions will be put in place where needed and the official diversion will be signed, this has to account for HGVs and low bridges, but we expect locals to use shorter routes."

The work is scheduled to last until 22 November 2018.

Stoke Crossroads Improvement Scheme

The council claims that the project will improve traffic flow at the busy junction: "This scheme has been modelled and tested for suitability and the results of the modelling indicate that it will have a beneficial effect on traffic.

"The scheme includes introducing intelligent traffic signaling at the crossroads that would assist late-running buses."

By introducing intelligent traffic signalling the lights will be able to detect late buses, giving them priority and allowing them through.

Traffic signals at the A3 southbound off-slip will also be modified, so as to work in sync with the A320 as a "single junction".

New pedestrian and cyclist crossing facilities will be installed on all arms of the junction, as well as on the adjoining A3 southbound off-slip approaching it.
