Community grants give boost to local groups

Published at 12:43pm 13th March 2018.

Cllr Iseult Roche, Lead Councillor for Project Aspire, Health, Safeguarding and Sport says "Local community groups play a really important role in helping make our borough a great place for everyone to live. Every person matters, and the projects we're supporting help to improve the lives of local residents of all ages in many ways - promoting health and wellbeing, reducing inequality and improving access to training, skills and work opportunities".

The community grants for 2018-19 were agreed at the Council's Executive meeting. Each application is thoroughly assessed to ensure projects meet the needs of our communities. Schemes selected for the one-year funding include:

  • Emerge Advocacy's 'Emerge' project - £13,000

  • Oakleaf Enterprise's 'Reach out for wellbeing' project - £10,000

  • CHIPS Guildford's 'Healthy Lives, Brighter Future' project - £10,000.

Other smaller schemes include support for Furniture Link's Upcycling Workshop, a Guildford Local Hub Co-ordinator for Family Voice Surrey and The Dance Movement's Wise Words project.

The one-year grants are for 2018-19. From next year, the grant schemes will operate in a different way, following the removal of grant contribution from Surrey County Council and a review of grants.

Adds Cllr Roche: "For the future, we're looking at alternative ways of providing support. We are currently putting together proposals for new schemes and these will be considered and reviewed at a future meeting of the Council's Executive".
