Providing services and helping the vulnerable during severe weather

Published at 1:17pm 2nd March 2018. (Updated at 2:20pm 2nd March 2018)

Guildford Borough Council continue to review the situation and you can find out the latest updates and advice on their website, twitter and Facebook at @GuildfordBC.

Please help by also passing the information on to your neighbours and anyone without online access.

Cllr Paul Spooner, Leader of the Council, said: "We continue to work together across the Council to keep our services running and prepare in case of worsening weather. We prioritise helping our most vulnerable residents, particularly the elderly and the homeless who rely on our vital services, to make sure they are safe and have all they need. We ask everyone to support their local community in any way possible and to check on their neighbours to make sure they are well.

"We contact our community care customers directly and inform all our residents and businesses about any changes in a variety of ways. Our main focus is the safety of the public and our staff and we thank everyone for their understanding in these difficult conditions.

"We plan ahead for a variety of emergency situations and we are anticipating more severe weather over the next few days. Surrey County Council is responsible for schools, highways and gritting the roads and we help support them with clearing and gritting pavements wherever possible. I urge residents to check both councils' websites for advice and information before and during any future disruption if they can."

Community care

We contact our customers directly each day to let them know what is happening and to make sure they are ok.

  • Community Meals will operate as normal today but will start deliveries early to accommodate any extra meals required by those who are unable to attend their normal day centre.

  • To reduce travel and other risks for people who usually attend, none of our day centres are open today. We will complete a phone welfare check and offer a hot meal through our Community Meals service.

  • Community Transport will phone all those due to travel today and check they still wish to travel, prioritising medical and hospital appointments. We will continue to provide transport where we are able to.

  • The luncheon club at our Dray Court sheltered housing will still go ahead.

Homeless and rough sleeping

Our staff work very closely with our partners to make sure that everyone who wants a place has somewhere safe and warm to sleep.

There is more information on our Rough sleeping page.

If you have concerns about anyone sleeping rough, or who appears to be homeless, please contact our local partner by emailing GuildfordHost@riverside.org.uk or calling them on 01483 302495

There is also a national rough sleeper Streetlink reporting line. Visit the Streetlink website to find out more, or call them on 0300 500 901.

Recycling and food waste

All our crews are out collecting your food waste and recycling today and we'll do our best to get to everyone with a scheduled collection.

Please look out for further updates as things may change due to the weather.

We concentrate on helping customers and supporting our local business community to keep the town centre open for business.

All our car parks are open and have been gritted. The upper levels of Leapale Road and York Road car parks have been closed as a precaution. The Park and Ride services are operating as usual.
