Have your say on plans for new play space in Guildford

Published at 6:44pm 6th November 2017. (Updated at 10:24am 24th November 2017)

Proposals for a new children’s play garden are being introduced to transform the space in Westnye Gardens by Millmead. Local residents have been involved in developing ideas on how the area can be revived and transformed into a beautiful walled park and inspiring play space for children beside the River Wey.

Cllr Richard Billington, Lead Councillor for Rural Economy, Countryside, Parks and Leisure says: “Our Parks and Leisure Services have been working with a group of residents to develop ideas to improve the garden. The proposal, which is a design idea at this stage, will ensure that Westnye Gardens maintains its special character, and that the play area will be nature-based and use natural materials as much as possible.  The focus is mainly on the play needs of younger children, as there is currently no provision in this area of Guildford for this age group.

"Families visiting Guildford town centre will also benefit from this play facility - as it is close to the High Street and the River Wey area.”

The concept for the ‘play garden’ has been designed by Davies White Ltd, RHS Gold Medal winning Landscape Architects. Their ethos is to create high quality, beautiful places in harmony with their environment, and to avoid the more conventional use of metal equipment and rubber surfaces.  Instead, the focus is to create a garden of wonder, fun and learning for younger children, where they can experience adventure in a natural garden setting.  New seating and planting will provide a welcoming atmosphere for everyone, improving the garden as a place to visit and enjoy a break.
