Bin strike in parts of Surrey called off

Published at 5:43am 5th November 2019. (Updated at 7:13am 5th November 2019)

A bin collection strike for parts of Surrey has been called off.

The industrial action had been planned for today and tomorrow (November 5 and November 6) in Surrey Heath and Elmbridge, as well as on November 19 and November 20.

The two 48 hour walk outs would have involved recycling and street cleaning teams from both depots.

Members of the GMB union had decided to strike over pay issues with contractor Amey.

The union members had claimed staff are paid "on average 17 percent less than some nearby boroughs and also have considerably less sick pay and holiday entitlement".

The union told Eagle earlier this month that some staff had to resort to using food banks

Yesterday Amey said the walk out was cancelled - and would NOT be taking place.

A statement said residents should leave their bins out to be emptied as usual.
