REVEALED: Elmbridge’s council tax

Published at 11:11pm 2nd March 2017. (Updated at 9:37am 17th March 2017)

Elmbridge residents will see an increase to their local council tax for 2017/2018.

Elmbridge Borough Council has increased its share by £4 per year, for a Band D property – a rise of 1.93%.

What does this mean?

The increase means Elmbridge residents will pay £211 for a Band D property (excluding Claygate).

Added to the amounts for Surrey County Council’s Basic and Adult Social Care charges (£1269.11 and £62.44), and the Surrey Police and Crime Commissioner’s charge of £224.57, the overall Council Tax for a Band D property will be £1,767.12 for 2017/2018, up from £1,695.47.

Householders in Claygate will have to pay an extra £14.15, as a contribution to Claygate Parish Council, resulting in a total bill of £1781.27.

What have Elmbridge Borough Council said about it?

Portfolio Holder for Resources, Cllr Chris Sadler:  “Department for Communities and Local Government figures, released at the time of the provisional finance settlement last December, show that of all the boroughs and districts in Surrey, Elmbridge has the highest core spending power per dwelling, at £310.”

“So, this fortunate situation, and our ability to find the extra income and savings necessary to arrive at a prudent, balanced budget, without having to take advantage of the temporary dispensation to increase our council tax by five pounds, means that we can propose a council tax precept increase of four pounds, or 1.93%, just below the 2% cap level”.
