Alton teenager gets set to peddle 90 miles for charity

Published at 6:00am 1st August 2020.

An Alton teenager is getting ready to take on a 90 mile cycling challenge for charity.

Charlie Baker, aged 15, will ride along the Shipwright's Way, from Alice Holt to Hayling Island and back again, to raise £4,000.

Half of the money raised will be donated to Phyllis Tuckwell Hospice Care, which provides end of life care for patients and families in West Surrey and North East Hampshire.

The rest will be used to fund a trip to Ghana for Charlie, where he will help a community in the Upper Volta region.

He will travel with Venture Force, an international charity which has supported a number of community projects there, including installing water purification systems, refurbishing medical centres, and building an orphanage and school buildings.

Charlie told Eagle Radio about how he has been preparing for the challenge:

"I'm feeling confident.

"It's obviously a challenge though.

"But I've been training quite a bit.

"I've been doing small bike rides after school work during the week to train for it, but then also I've been doing longer bike rides at the weekends.

"My dad will be doing it with me and my mum will be in the car with inner tubes and things like that in case of a puncture.

"But yes, I'm really looking forward to it."

If he beats his target, any additional money he raises will also go to Phyllis Tuckwell.

Fiona Chapman, fundraiser at the charity, said:

"We would like to thank Charlie for choosing to support Phyllis Tuckwell, and we wish him lots of luck on this challenging ride.

"During the pandemic, we have had to cancel many of our fundraising events, resulting in a huge loss of income.

"£2,000 could cover the costs of one of our In-Patient Unit nurses for nearly three weeks.

"These nurses each care for up to five patients, providing 24-hour nursing care, and offering emotional support to their families and carers too."
