Alton replaces Christmas tree with giant Santa hat

Things are looking a little different outside Alton's Assembly Rooms this Christmas.

It's because after having a tree there for a number of years, the council have replaced it with a giant Santa hat instead.

Fear not though Yuletide traditionalists as Alton is not without trees altogether and one will still sit pride of place in Market Square.

The light installation has divided opinion, however, with some describing it as "tacky", but there has also been plenty of love for it too.

Originally made in Liverpool, the one of a kind installation was assembled by local company "The Christmas Decorators" and spent last Christmas on display at St Katharine Docks in London.

The hat is set to be switched on tomorrow (1 December) as part of Alton's Yuletide Weekend.
