East Hampshire MP wants over 50s to head in 'New Directions'

East Hampshire MP Damian Hinds has been promoting the opportunities available to over 50s.

After launching in April last year, the New Directions event returned to Alton on Friday (26 October).

With more than 50 exhibitors it aims to bring together a wide range of employment, training and volunteering opportunities for older people, with a number of talks and workshops running alongside the main exhibition.

Damian said:

"With the rate of unemployment now as low as 4.2%, it’s important that we help employers recruit the talent they need from parts of the workforce they may not have considered before.

"Whatever business or organisation you've been working in, you will have developed particular skills, abilities and experiences which are useful for working in that organisation but also useful for doing something different.

"There are plenty of companies out there wanting to recruit people with experience, with the accumulated wisdom that comes from having worked in one or two careers already.

"Diversity in work forces is really important and having young people in your workforce is important, also having older people - partly because it is important to understand you customer base."
