Whitehill & Bordon - Healthiest town in the country?

Published at 4:29pm 3rd September 2018.

Is Whitehill and Bordon the healthiest town in the Country?

The East Hampshire town was selected as one of ten towns across England to become the healthiest it can be.

This is part of the NHS pilot called 'Healthy New Towns', aiming to put the foundations in place to start making towns live healthier and more active.

East Hampshire District Council (EHDC) has been working alongside a wide range of public sector, private sector and voluntary organisations. Some of these include; Whitehill & Bordon regeneration company, Hampshire county council, Radian, Energise Me, NHS England and Community First.

Radian has launched a 'Food Academy' at Bordon's 'Cafe 1759', teaching youngsters how to cook healthy and make nutritious meals on a budget.

The new healthy town has introduced 'balance bike training' to around 129 pre-school children aged three and above, teaching them how to ride a bike without stabilisers.

Videos have been produced by the EHDC in collaboration with Radian and the University of Portsmouth to show the technology on offer for residents to improve their mental and physical health and wellbeing.

Weekly events like the 'Hogmoor Inclosure Parkrun' has attracted up to 284 runners a week, encouraging the local people to frequently exercise.

Seven non-profit organisations in Whitehill & Bordon received grants of between £500 and £1,500 towards projects promoting healthy lifestyle in 2016.

EHDC's Portfolio holder, Councillor Ferris Cowper said "Ensuring Whitehill and Bordon is one of the healthiest towns in the area has been, and continues to be, a major success.

"I think residents are really starting to see and feel the results.

"We hope that residents feel they are starting to have everything in place to live a healthy and active lifestyle and are proud to live in a town that promotes this in the way Whitehall & Bordon does."
