Alton set for a new £20 million sports centre

Published at 7:48pm 6th March 2018.

Plans for a brand-new sports centre for Alton have been approved.

The state of the art venue will be ready in 2019 , replacing the existing 40 year old facility which is considered well out of date.

The current sports centre will stay open throughout the construction so that people can still use the facilities without any interruption.

Cllr Richard Millard, EHDC’s Leader, said the " fantastic new centre will give even more people across the area the opportunity to take part in sports and exercise in a well-deserved modern facility."

He added "The investment of £20m in our communities in Alton is well worth it if we can get more people more active more often.

Significantly more local residents will have access to the modern facilities which will have touch pad timers on the swimming pool, virtual spinning in the group cycle studio, new fitness studios, a spa and a much larger gym.

Richard Millard, says  that the company, Everyone Active, will run the new sports centre.

It will ensure the new facility will be self funding, and won't cost local residents any more in taxes.

Income from the centre will go towards local public services, ensuring council tax is kept to a minimum.

Everyone Active have also submitted plans to run two other similar facilities in Whitehill and Bordon.

The new centre will have:

  • A six-lane swimming pool deep enough to allow the GCSE programme work. It will have hi-tech touch-pad timers, starting blocks and seating for 150 spectators.
  • A learner pool with an adjustable floor so it can be used safely by different age groups for different purposes.
  • An air-conditioned group cycle studio, including hi-tech virtual classes.
  • A six-court sports hall with sprung wooden floor and acoustic protection.
  • Two multi-use studios capable of hosting a range of group exercise activities with air conditioning, mirrored walls and ballet bars. One studio can also heat to 38°C, allowing it to be used for Hot Yoga.
  • A much larger 130-station gym, with its own dedicated changing area and locker facilities, reflecting the popularity of this kind of training.

The centre will also feature a spa that includes four treatment rooms and recovery areas, including a sauna, steam room and hydro pool.

Guests will also have access to heated lounge chairs and a monsoon shower.
