Hundred year old stone paving stolen from Alton home

Police are investigating what they say is "a rare and unusual theft" of old stone paving in Alton.

Around 100 square metres of York stone dating back more than a hundred years was taken.from the garden of a home in East Worldham overnight between January 11 and 12.

Officers say it is believed the slabs would have had to have been loaded onto a vehicle by several people.

A number of slabs were lifted but left behind - officers say this suggests the offenders had stopped loading them once their vehicle was full.

They say the uniquely weathered stone is of sentimental value - the paving was laid in around 1917, when the owner's great grandmother was living at the property.

Hampshire Constabulary say good quality York stone is valued at about £100 per square metre - and that these slabs could have been stolen for resale or for a landscaping development.

The slabs are described as "beautifully weathered and many have picturesque lichen on them, others some moss."

The mostly rectangular-shape stone varies in size from about 30cm by 25cm to twice that size, and are about 4cm thick.

They have worn over the years so some are no longer flat but bowed towards the middle.

PC Stephen Rogerson said: “You may have been offered these stones or seen them advertised for sale.

There is sentimental value within these slabs and they are uniquely weathered, so please contact us if you have any information that would assist us in locating them.”
