Thatch alert: Prevent fires in your home

Published at 12:04pm 3rd December 2017.

Living in a thatched property doesn't mean you are any more at risk from fire.

But it does mean you need to consider your fire safety and maintain your home to prevent fire.

Earlier in the week, a home was destroyed in Alton when a fire broke out.

Around 50 firefighters were called in to tackle the blaze in Lower Foyle.

Although thatch fires are not common, over 90% of thatch roof fires start as a result of a faulty flue or chimney.

The thatch is designed to repel water which makes extinguishing these fires difficult.

Hampshire Fire and Rescue have now issued a safety advice video on looking after your thatched home, and preventing fires.
