Major roadworks in Alton town centre

Published at 6:04am 15th May 2017.

Major roadworks move into Alton town centre on Monday morning, with a warning for drivers to plan ahead.

A new water pipe is being laid along Butts Road and the double roundabout.

Temporary traffic lights will be in place for three weeks.

It is the continuation of works which began in January.

A 3,000 metre pipeline is being laid by South East Water and is costing £1.4m.

This work will be carried out for approximately three weeks before the site is temporarily restored in time for the town's Jane Austen commemorative events.

The overall project is due to end in February 2018.

In addition, South East Water will be constructing a new slip road to access a compound in land off Selborne Road to minimise disruption along this area.

Matthew Cooper, Project Manager at South East Water, said: "The safety of the public and our workforce is our number one priority when we carry out work which is why we need to have temporary traffic lights in place.

"We will be working as quickly as possible to lay the next section of pipe before the Jane Austen commemorative events take place next month. We will then return to the area at the end of June to carry on laying this section of pipe.

"We know roadworks can be frustrating but we will be working as quickly as possible to minimise inconvenience to local residents and businesses."
