Alton residents forced to travel to Basingstoke as police station closes

Published at 12:57pm 2nd May 2017. (Updated at 4:00pm 2nd May 2017)

Alton residents will no longer have a police station as it's closing down today.

Hampshire Constabulary tells us most people there no longer come into the station - but contact the police over the phone or online.

They say they'll still have a police presence around the town.

And it'll still have a local neighbourhood and response team operating locally.

The nearest station offering front of counter services is Basingstoke - or Aldershot.

From today, the Neighbourhood, Patrol and Response teams have moved to Mill Lane in Alton, and the front counter services previously at Alton Police Station have moved.

From today, the nearest counter services will be available at:

Hampshire Constabulary's District Commander Clare Jenkins said: "Although the police station has closed, we want to reassure our communities that we are still maintaining our patrolling strategy and high visible presence within Alton and the surrounding areas."

Michael Lane, Police and Crime Commissioner, said: "Building effective partnerships is one of my priorities for the role of Commissioner, and our service must respond to changing demands.

"This move for Neighbourhood and Response teams keeps the police in the centre of Alton, where they will continue to keep residents safer."

Today, the vast majority of residents contacting the police do so via telephone, via online and other methods As a result, use of front counter services in Alton has declined considerably, as other contact methods are preferred by members of the community.

In an emergency, contact 999, or call 101 in other situations.

You can also email your local team via East.Hants.Police@hampshire.pnn.police.uk or visit www.hampshire.police.uk/contact-us/ to find out how else you can contact the police.

The Response and Neighbourhood teams have moved to Hatch House, Alton. This is a shared building with Hampshire County Council, continuing the drive to build on partnerships that use public money cost effectively.
