After taking nominations from diners, thousands voted in the Listener Choice Awards.

Taking 26 per cent of the vote, Sushi Lab can now claim to be the area's best restaurant as voted for by Eagle's listeners.

The restaurant's nomination said: "Sushi Lab is an independent quick service Japanese restaurant in Guildford town centre.

"Although Sushi Lab has only been opened for a few months, they have already received lots of great comments and reviews from customers (5 star on Facebook, 5 star on TripAdvisor, 4.8 star on Google Maps).

"They make everything fresh every day and provide great customer services.

"From sushi to hot food, from street food to Japanese drinks and desserts, Sushi Lab is the definitely most exciting Japanese place to eat and chill at!"

We went to visit owner Calvin Jor, who only graduated from the University of Surrey last year!

What is the back story of Sushi Lab?

"We only opened eight months ago so we are still quite new.

"I used to go to the University of Surrey and I have always wanted to start my own business.

"In my final year I was deciding between looking for jobs or going home, but I thought if I want to start my own business, now is the time to do it."

How are the first few months going?

"It's been quite challenging. When we first opened nobody knew who we were.

"But people have started to know who we are here and we are quite unique, with unusual Japanese food and snacks and drink which you can't get anywhere else in Guildford."

Tell us about the decorations in the restaurant

"I actually went to Japan last year with one suitcase and 11 kilos of luggage, but I came back with two suitcases and 45 kilos of luggage.

"It's a lot of stuff to carry but it was definitely worth it!

"The place is very Japanese and that makes it unique."

How does it feel to be voted Surrey and Hampshire's Best Restaurant?

"It's amazing! Especially as most of the people we beat have been here for ages, we only opened eight months ago.

"It's just amazing, unbelievable. I'm so thrilled.

Why do you think people voted for Sushi Lab?

"I'd say it's attention to detail and customer service.

"Every time a customer walks in I want to make sure they are treated like VIPs.

"I spend so much time making sure everyone is happy and that they like their food.

"We take lots of feedback and the more feedback we get the better.

"We put a lot of effort into customising each customer's experience. We have games where people can sit and play for a few hours.

"It can be a bit more like a cultural hub."
