Fleet Services Fire: Temporary building on its way

Published at 2:42pm 16th March 2017. (Updated at 2:45pm 16th March 2017)

A temporary building is to open at Fleet Services, following a devastating fire last year.

Since December 2016, much of the site on the southbound M3 has remained out of use.

From Thursday March 23rd, a temporary building will open to the public.

It will house Starbucks, little Waitrose, Burger King, Harry Ramsdens, WH Smith, Chopstix, Starbucks Drive Thru, as well as a petrol station, Days Inn hotel and toilet facilities.

Welcome Break Chief Executive Officer, Rod McKie, said: "We are pleased that the temporary building is to reopen offering an excellent range of facilities to our customers.

"Our new permanent building will soon be under construction to open in 2018."

Fleet fire damage

The fire broke out at around 10:25pm, with the restaurant area ablaze and Hampshire Fire and Rescue describing it as severe.

Surrey Fire and Rescue also came to their aid.

At one stage 100 firefighters were fighting the flames through the night to stop it spreading.

No-one was injured, but there was significant fire and smoke damage to the building.

At the time, Mr McKie said: "The fire has caused extensive damage to Fleet South.  Thankfully none of our staff or members of the public at the site have been injured.

"We are extremely grateful to the firefighters who tackled the blaze and will assist with their investigations.

"The main amenities building in Fleet South will remain closed until further notice."
