About:
The December Institute of Physics South Central Branch Public talk brings Prof Phil Manning, Professor of Natural History at the University of Manchester to talk about how he uses physics to understand what happened to the dinosaurs...

Extinction has always been part of Life on Earth. The ebb and flow of species can both evolve or disappear as a function of extinction events. The advent of 21st Century imaging technology now permits us to view past life in ways we never dreamt of, but also the mechanisms that have driven the extinguishing forces of mass extinction events. Dinosaurs are without doubt an icon of extinction, but our knowledge of the events that closed the Cretaceous is still poorly understood. However, the latest technology, de novo approaches and new sites from around the globe are helping science constrain the timing and mechanisms behind the extinction of the dinosaurs.
