Plant Maintenance Apprentice

This apprenticeship course covers all the basic principles you need to learn to become a plant mechanic and work with our plant engineering team and Shorts Group Ltd. The ideal candidate will be committed to a career within Plant hire engineering and gaining the L3 NVQ in Construction Plant or Machinery Maintenance.

You should have a mechanical aptitude and interest, be an excellent problem solving and logical thinker. Must follow instruction 100% without shortcuts, and be comfortable with computers. You must be reliable, honest, enthusiastic, inquisitive, and physically fit. Must be able to stay focused and stick with a task until completion. Finally, you must be comfortable working outdoors in all weather in site environments and within a workshop facility. You’ll learn how to service and repair machines and equipment, including replacing parts and checking and calibrating instruments. You’ll study everything from basic engineering skills to the latest technological advancements in electro-hydraulics and computerised control systems. During your initial 2 year Apprenticeship you will split your time as follows: Monday to Friday 07:00 – 16:30 (1 hour unpaid lunch break), plus 4 hours by rota on a Saturday morning on site working/learning. As part of these core hours, you will spend time on residential away learning. Year 1: • 16 weeks training (in 4 blocks) You’ll spend the periods between college training with your employer, developing work-based skills and knowledge. Year 2: • 9 weeks training (in 3 blocks) You’ll spend the periods between college training with your employer, developing work-based skills and knowledge. Qualifications you gain: • Level 2 NVQ Diploma in Plant Maintenance • Level 1 functional skills • Employment responsibilities and rights • Personal learning and thinking skills Academic Entry requirements: The recommended qualifications are four GCSEs (grade D or higher). Through the CITB, to help assess your suitability for the course, you'll need to: • complete a skills learning exercise and possibly attend the college for further tests. • complete a questionnaire and take part in an informal discussion. Following this, it would be strongly encouraged and supported to continue to your Level 3 NVQ.
