Microbusinesses now represent significant economic and societal impact in the UK

  • Top motivations for starting a microbusiness are; extra income, flexible work schedule and the chance to be creative

  • To celebrate Brits growing support of microbusinesses, Etsy are holding their first-ever Design Awards

The global economy is shifting in ways that make it easier for anyone with an idea and an internet connection to start and grow a global business. Today, more people than ever work independently, combine income from multiple sources, and pursue work they are passionate about. As the future for work is becoming more flexible in the UK, many are choosing to start their own microbusinesses. While individually their businesses may be small, together these microbusinesses represent significant economic and societal impact.

Research from global online marketplace Etsy has revealed that creative and independent businesses are thriving with 220,000 sellers in the UK turning existing passions or hobbies into monetised businesses. The research has shown that 94% of UK savvy entrepreneurs signed up to the global marketplace run their businesses from home.

The research finds that globally on Etsy, most sellers (70%) want to start a business to be more creative, and the majority (75%) still see that as a benefit today. Other indicators like doing something enjoyable with their spare time, earning extra income, and creating a flexible work schedule were top motivations for sellers to start creative businesses—and they are top benefits realised today.

To highlight the rise of independent businesses, flexible working initiatives and creative industries, the global Design Awards are being launched by global marketplace Etsy and aim to support and celebrate independent businesses across the world.

Today, more people than ever work independently, combine income from multiple sources, and pursue work they are passionate about. As the future for work is becoming more flexible in the UK, many are choosing to start their own microbusinesses.
